"History of Trempealeau County Wisconsin, 1917": Chapter 8: Tax Records
-As transcribed from pages 102 - 105 Tax Records. The early tax records. to a certain, are valuable in fixing the early settlers in the various townships. Their insufficiency, however, as a foundation in compiling the story of the early settlers lies first, the fact that "resident owner" on the tax books often meant resident of the county rather than resident of the township; second, in the fact that no effort was made by the assessors to secure a correct spelling of names, and, third, to the fact that many of the actual settlers were not payers of real estate taxes.
