The material included here has been compiled by Mr. Gamroth from a wide variety of resources.  Some of the resources used have (or will) appear elsewhere in its entirety on this website.  It is included here as Mr. Gamroth's work.  This collection is an unpublished work and has been donated to us by the Independence Public Library.  We thank them for this interesting and valuable contribution.

Introduction to materials

The following material was copied from unpublished manuscripts on file in the Independence Public Library.

The information was prepared by various persons in 1947 relating to the early pioneers, their places of origin and the trials and hardships they endured in Trempealeau County, Wisconsin.

The writers were of the third generation in most instances.  They had to rely heavily on the stories of the early settlers who may have forgotten many incidents.  Regardless of the shortcomings, the information pretty well depicts the events of the early days.  This is confirmed by well documented books in state and local history.  During my early years, I had heard many pioneers relate their experiences.
